Come and shake off the winter at the Pacific Cultural Center on Saturday March 16th with Anzanga Marimba Ensemble.
Anzanga's concerts are high-energy dance eventsthe interlocking rhythms & melodies of the 8-piece marimba ensemble, coupled with soulful vocals and hosho (gourd shakers), create a deep ecstatic groove. For over 25 years, the world-class Seattle-based ensemble has shared the energizing music of African marimba nationally and internationally, and most recently they are proud winners of the Battle of the Bands 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted by the International Marimba and Steel Pan Festival.
Anzanga Marimba Ensemble was founded in 1986 by Sheree Seretse, and remains one of the foremost Shona-style marimba bands in the world. Their polyrhythmic music, based on Zimbabwean traditional & contemporary tunes, has inspired many to listen deeper to the rich traditions of Southern African music. Their repertoire also includes pieces from Mozambique, South Africa, Gambia, as well as original compositions. Seretse's mantra is articulating the sounds on the marimba, emphasizing the soul of the music through precise musicianship, expression and deep understanding. Bandleader Seretse is a multi-instrumentalist, music teacher and activist who is accomplished at marimba, mbira, drums, hosho, singing and dance.
As an original pioneering group on the Zimbabwean marimba scene in the US, Anzanga's first concert in Santa Cruz was in the 80s. Now over 10 years since they have performed locally, we are thrilled to welcome them back at the Pacific Cultural Center with open arms.
