Gershwin: Straight Up With a Twist!
Egan's Ballard Jam House
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

Alaballew Productions and Egan's Ballard Jam House present The American Music Box series of shows featuring American music and composers.

The first of these is "Gershwin: Straight Up with a Twist" featuring Terence Alaric's piano arrangements of Gershwin tunes, along with the eloquent nylon-string guitar of Mark Turnbull (Laguna Beach, CA) and the sensual electric guitar of Hans York (Dallas, TX).  Adding to the evening are two Seattle singers, Connie Corrick and Robin Parks.

This quintet of talented artists will perform a program from Gershwin's popular catalog, from "Swanee" to "Our Love Is Here To Stay," with hits in between such as "Fascinatin' Rhythm", "But Not For Me", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Embraceable You", "Nice Work If you Can Get It", "Someone to Watch Over Me", and many more.  The program also includes some of Gershwin's classical pieces, and, of course, highlights from "Porgy and Bess".

If you haven't heard George Gershwin's melodies in a while and want to know why it is, though he died young at 38, this son of Jewish immigrants is considered to be one of America's greatest composers and the first to cross the border from popular to classical, well, this is your chance.

The performers:

Hans York.  German born, award-winning, international touring musician, composer, singer/songwriter, with his elegant electric guitar in alternate tuning renders George Gershwin's classic songs timeless. www.hansyork.com

Mark Turnbull.  Grammy-nominated songwriter, musical theatre composer and entertainer, Mark interprets with eloquence and style the glorious music of George Gershwin, letting us hear these well-known songs with new ears. www.markturnbullsings.com.

Terence Alaric.  Popular pianist, show composer, and arranger, Terry brings his love of Gershwin melodies and harmonies to new levels in his wonderful arrangements and virtuoso playing.

Connie Corrick has performed leading theatrical roles at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Village Theatre and Seattle Children's theatre. She has been a featured vocalist internationally in resort hotels, theatres and cabarets.  Her next appearance is April 5 & 6 when she will join legendary theatre organist, Dennis James, for a program of Victorian music, poetry, and Charlie Chaplain.

Robin Parks (nee Robyne de Jong) is a multi-talented actress whose career includes leading theatrical roles both here in Seattle and Southern California.  She is also a voice over and animated character voice artist with many films to her credit.  She can sing Gershwin sweet or sultry, and she does.
