(Richmond, VA) The African American Repertory Theatre of Virginia (AART) and Friends of Dogwood Dell present Ecce (pronounced ek-tchay), by emerging Washington, DC-based playwright A.P. Carroll, on February 28th through March 10th at Pine Camp Cultural Arts Center located at 4901 Old Brook Road.
Directed by Margaret Joyner, Ecce, is a modern historical interpretation of the Crucifixion of Jesus, but at the center of this story lies Pontius Pilate, a wellmeaning but ambitious politician.
The Roman occupation of Israel and the appearance of Jesus of Nazareth took place not two thousand years ago, but in the present day. A modern-day Pontius Pilate has just been appointed governor of Judea, a hostile territory whose people see Rome as a force bent on destroying their way of life. The political savvy Pilate must negotiate with competing religious and legislative forces in Jerusalem, capture a terrorist, watch out for those in Rome bent on his destruction, remain in the good graces of Caesar Augustus and ultimately decide who lives and who dies the terrorist or the pacifist.
Ecce, stars Todd Schall-Vess (Pilate) and Ray Taalib-Deen (Ceasar), and is a new addition to the Acts of Faith Festival. The Acts of Faith Festival is America's largest faith-inspired theatre event and is in its 9th year in Richmond. The festival explores faith through theatre. Second Presbyterian Church is the convening sponsor of this collaboration between the faith community and professional theatre companies.
Post-show talk backs will be held following performances on closing night March 10th with the writer, A.P. Carroll. and the cast.
