Beginner West African Dance
West African Dance Classes at the Dance Hall in Kittery.
During the four week beginner series, you will learn some of the fundamentals of West African Dance -- including basic movements, the connection between drummers and dancers, and the cultural significance of a dance from Guinea, West Africa.
Come join us in this fantastic form of exercise. Once the drumming begins, the cares of your day will melt off your shoulders.

Liz Fowler-Camara has been dancing most of her life. She has a BA in Dance Studies from Connecticut College and was first introduced to West African Dance as a student in 1991 and was immediately hooked. Since then she has studied with teachers from Guinea, Mali and Senegal and has traveled to Guinea to study dance intensively four times.
Alhassane Camara was born in Conakry the capital city of Guinea in West Africa. He began playing the djembe as a teenager. In addition to playing with local companies Ballet Tayeleh and Djembe Africa, Alhassane has accompanied Youssouf Koumbassa's dance classes for several years. Since moving to the United States, Alhassane is adjusting to cold winters and has continued to accompany dance classes, teach drum lessons and lead workshops.
