About the Artist: Jesús Montoya (Cantaor): Is from Seville, Spain. Born into the one of the oldest Gypsy families. He was steeped in flamenco purity and power, earning him the name "El Rey Del Fandangos Grande" at age 7 and by age 9 he had started his professional singing career. By age 13, he started to tour with various professional companies. Now a true master of the flamenco arts, Jesús is a man of overwhelming integrity. In addition to his Spanish and European touring credentials, he has toured tirelessly with major flamenco companies throughout the United States and Canada. An accomplished recording artist as well, including CD's of original compositions as well as collaborations with various world class artists, Jesús has released his 8th CD. The incredibly staged production and recording of "AINADAMAR" "FOUNTAIN OF TEARS" was a double winner of the 2007 Grammy Awards for "BEST CLASSICAL CONTEMPORARY COMPOSITION" and"BEST OPERA RECORDING" for How I Got My Start. In addition to being the one most respected and sought after touring flamenco singers brought to the US, he continues to perform with his own flamenco company "Pureza Flamenca", widely known for putting on some of the greatest and most exciting flamenco shows worldwide. This award winning company of distinguished flamenco artists are nothing less than brilliant and tantilizing.
José Tanaka (Guitarist): Born in Kyoto Japan, and raised by family steeped in the Flamenco arts (his father & his uncle both are Flamenco guitarists & his mother is a Flamenco dancer). He has a natural Flamenco musical ability & edge, which raised him above other artists. The Spanish name José was given to him by his parents to further strengthen his ties to natural Flamenco. Tanaka has been performing since childhood. At the age of 24 Tanaka rediscovered his passion for Flamenco and pursued further study in Seville and Madrid, Spain where he polished his technique studying with the Masters and developed and honed his soniquete (groove) and aire (feel) playing the guitar everyday amongst the gypsies. Tanaka continues to go back to Spain frequently to get inspired.
Mizuho Sato (Dancer): Was born in Iwate, Japan and started classical ballet at the age of four. As she performed on stage and attained years of experience in winning balletic competitions, she pursued her career as a dancer and took summer school in the Royal Ballet Academy of England. Entering Sophia (Jouchi) University in Tokyo brought her a strong encounter with flamenco, and she decided to shift her career.The following year she was in Seville, Spain, taking classes from prestigious instructors like Manolo Marin, Maria del Mar Verranga, Javier Cruz, and Alicia Marquez. After her studies, she returned to Tokyo and started performing in several well known tablaos. In the year 2000, she received awards from the Japanese Flamenco Association and the Ambassador of Spain.
Reyes Barrios (Dancer): Was born and studied in Seville, Spain where she was constantly surrounded by the ambience of Flamenco song and dance. As a performer, Reyes has graced the public with various academic performances such as Pasos y Colores, Entre Familia y Flamenco, Espiritu Flamenco and Flamenco del Corazon. She regularly performs at venues such as Café Sevilla, Fountain Theater, and Tablao Flamenco. Reyes has worked with San Diego and Los Angeles artists such as Jesus Montoya, Jose Tanaka, Mizuho Sato. Reyes is known as a versatile performer, able to surprise her audiences with both song and dance in a variety of styles, ranging from legendary Flamenco strong holds such as Utrera, Lebrija, Sevilla, Jerez, and Moron.
