DCF WORKSHOP: Improvising for Television
In this workshop we will explore how to make smart, funny choices when asked to improvise off a script both in an audition or while shooting on set. Often directors, producers, and writers will ask actors to improvise in an audition or while shooting. This can be an exciting opportunity--a way to show off comedic abilities while (hopefully) showing the production how to make the spot or scene "better". How do actors respect the script while improvising? We will explore how to navigate this in commercial auditions, television auditions, and with a script once the job's been booked. We will learn how to make smart, intelligent choices while remaining in character, respecting the world the writers have created, and "adding" to the script in an intelligent and thoughtful way.
Maribeth has been performing, writing, and improvising professionally for over 15 years. She currently plays Alice Murphy on Comedy Central's hit show "Workaholics". She has guest starred on many cable and network shows including Modern Family, The Neighbors, Parks and Recreation, According to Jim, and Marc Maron's new show "Maron" set to premiere on IFC in August. She was a recurring cast member on NBC's improvised competition show "Thank God Your Here" and co-starred with Jennifer Lopez in CBS film's "The Backup Plan". She is a proud alum of The Second City Detroit and Chicago main stages. Currently, Maribeth lives in LA.
