A Night of Classic Theatre
In David Ives one act play "Time Flies", two mayflies live out their 24-hour "lives in a day" blissfully unaware of how quickly their allotted time passes. They notice nothing beyond the procession of moments that have led them to their ecstatic moment--when time takes a hand and reveals their passing through into danger and irony. For our mayflies, Horace and May, as for ourselves, time has wings. This one-act will also be performed at the WACT Festival at the River Arts Center in Prairie du Sac on February 23 in competition. In "Sorry Wrong Number", a bedridden woman accidentally overhears two thugs planning an innocent woman's murder over the telephone. As she grows more desperate to find help for this unknown victim, her frantic calls to operators, hospitals, police bear no satisfaction for us or the imperiled victim who is drawn closer and closer to the nameless encounter with death. Lucille Fletcher's "Sorry Wrong Number" is considered by critics one of, if not the finest, radio dramas ever written. This radio play will be fully staged. In "The Hitch Hiker," another timeless Lucille Fletcher radio play, Ronald Adams is driving cross-country New Jersey to California. On the road the first day he sees a man hitch hiking and, an hour later sees him again. Again and again along the way, Adams sees the same figure. Is seeing believing? Increasingly terrified by appearances of the hitch-hiker Adams crashes his car trying to run down this apparition. Finally, alone on the Texas prairie, Adams learns through a call back home to his mother, he, Adams, has traveled through an irreversible change while on the New Jersey turnpike. Adams understands better now why his persistent hitch hiker has been shaped in his mind by pain and by great value. This play will be performed as a traditional radio play. "Time Flies" will be directed by William Carnes. "Sorry Wrong Number" and "The Hitch Hiker" will be directed by Mike Irwin. Our production is supported in part by a grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation.
