Gunnar Idenstam, Organist, in Concert
TICKETS AVAILABLE, FOR SALE, AT CENTRAL LUTHERAN AT 3PM!!
Central is pleased to welcome Gunnar Idenstam -- classical organist, folk musician and symphonic rocker -- to the keyboard of the mighty Casavant organ. Considered one of the world's most versatile and imaginative concert organists, Mr. Idenstam is the recent recipient of the prestigious Interprete Prize 2012 from Sweden's Royal Academy of Music. The Jury said of Gunnar Idenstam: "He has created his own musical platform and with a sense of tradition and renewal he brings influences from different genres, far from the traditional organ world, into the context of organ music. With a dazzling technique, serious and yet playful, and with revolutionary improvisations, he creates organ art on the highest international level." The Prize was presented on November 26, 2012 by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden.
The program will include a set of Swedish folk music, including a wedding march by ABBA's Benny Andersson, which Mr. Idenstam says he thinks "will soon become one of the most-loved folk wedding marches, at least in Sweden." Among works by Johann Sebastian Bach (Toccata and fugue in D Minor BWV 538) and Jean-Baptiste Lully (from Le bourgeois gentilhomme), the performance will include two works for symphonic organ that have become Idenstam's signature pieces and arrangements: La Mer by Claude Debussy and Bolero by Maurice Ravel.
Mr. Idenstam will be introduced by Mr. Bruce Karstadt, Honorary Consul General in Minnesota for the Kingdom of Sweden.
A reception following the concert will include a conversation between Gunnar Idenstam and Michael Barone, host of Pipedreams from American Public Media.
