Spotlight on Opera presents Arabian Nights
Spotlight on Opera, Austin's own community opera troupe, takes you on a magic carpet ride with an evening of one acts and excerpts on exotic themes from the Middle East.
Straight from 1001 Nights comes Carl Maria von Weber's hilarious one act, Abu Hassan. The Caliph of Bagdad in his generosity offers 50 pieces of gold to new widows and widowers. Deep in debt and hounded by creditors, his servant Abu Hassan fakes his own death so his wife, Fatima, can collect. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time ...
In The Escape from the Seraglio by Mozart, a noblewoman has been kidnapped into the harem of Pasha Selim, where she must resist his advances while her saucy maid fends off the Pasha's servant. Meanwhile, their lovers plot a dangerous rescue.
Samson et Dalila, by Saint-Saens, offers up some of the most beautiful and seductive music in the repertoire, as the priestess Dalila plots with the High Priest of Dagon to revenge herself on her former lover, Samson, who has left her.
Rossini's madcap comedy L'Italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) follows the exploits of the independent-minded Isabella, who has just discovered that her lost lover, Lindoro, has been enslaved by the Bey of Algiers. The Bey is excited to add an Italian female to his harem, but he doesn't know what he's gotten into!
Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert & Sullivan fame teamed up with librettist Basil Hood for The Rose of Persia, wrought with a good-hearted merchant with 25 wives who ends up being mistaken for the Sultan; an importunate poet who falls for the wrong girl; sultanas and harem girls sneaking out on the town for a good time; and a bored Sultan who decides to teach everybody a lesson --- all set to Sullivan's catchy, rollicking tunes.
