East of the Tarpits

Anthology Film Archives
New York, NY

FEATURE VIDEO 74:00 MIN INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE
"Unbelievably, the films been turned down by every major gay film festival in America. It just wasnt gay enough."  G.L.

Superstar Holly Woodlawn returns to the silver screen as Mattie, a New York housewife whos come to California on a pilgrimage to Barbra Streisands former Malibu ranch. She crashes with her ex-flame, Rocco (Frank Messina of the 1990s soap Santa Barbara), who questions Matties ulterior motives for turning up in Lala Land with little warninghow long is she really planning to stay, and what happened in New York? Mapplethorpe model Robert Sherman plays Matties decadently glitzy pal Luciana, who shakes things up with odes to bygone days, efforts to regale Mattie with song (and maracas), even an attempt to conjure a superior diva from beyond the grave!

Michael Musto calls East of the Tar Pits an intoxicatingly funny Douglas Sirk-ian campathon, and yet there is a tender quality to the film. Mattie seems to find her place again while on the road to Babs housecontentedly out of reach from the straight world, at home in the ancestral haze of Old Hollywoods constant glamour.

Introduced by Michael Musto. Q&A with Mr. LeGault and Ms. Woodlawn led by John Thomson following the screening.
