She Stoops to Conquer
Wealthy gentleman Dick Hardcastle has arranged a meeting with his daughter, Kate, and the son of old friend. His hope is that they will fall in love and marry. But the son, Charles Marlow, is awkward and shy around women of upper class. However, around women of lower class, he is quite the opposite.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hardcastle's wife, Dorothy, is busy arranging a marriage between her son from a previous marriage and her niece, Constance Neville. But her son, Tony Lumpkin, and Constance can't stand each other. Constance is in love with George Hastings, a friend and traveling companion of Charles Marlow.
When Charles and George get lost on the way to the Hardcastle home, they stop at an alehouse to get directions. The alehouse is the hangout of Tony Lumpkin, who proceeds to play a trick on the two travelers. He gives them directions to the Hardcastle home, but tells them that the home is an inn.
Charles and George arrive at the home and are greeted by Dick Hardcastle, whom they mistake for the innkeeper. Charles and Kate Hardcastle have disastrous first meeting. Poor Charles is so shy, he can't even look her in the face. Having never seen her face, he later mistakes her for the maid, falls head over heals in love, and sets out to win her affection.
Stolen jewels, an eccentric collection of servants, and a mysterious late night journey add to the fun that is "She Stoops to Conquer."
