John Patrick Shanely's popular one act Danny and the Deep Blue Sea can simply be overlooked as an emotional story about human connection. While this aspect of the play is true human connection is a vast understatement. Danny enters a bar after fighting his way through the rough city streets, he sees Roberta a young mother with a troubled past dying to be set free of her 'secret'. From the instant we see these characters we know a love story is afoot. However, it is the way these characters interact and the way they articulate their experiences that makes us emphathize with John Patrick Shannely's nuanced and brilliantly tragic characters. We find beauty in their rough exterior and hope alongside these troubled lovers. Danny and Roberta are simply, a flower in the crack of a sidewalk thus reminding us that beauty exists in all forms. Sometimes we just need to look extra hard for it.
