Jazzin' with the Classics by Candlelight for Christmas
In Jazzin' with the Classics by Candlelight for Christmas, the third annual Candlelight Concerts presents four renowned classical and jazz artists and friends who meld their musical perspectives in this unique candlelight celebration of the Yuletide season. Tsatsanis, Lund, Cohan and Nery team up to bridge contemporary improvisational jazz and the art music of baroque and renaissance times. Instrumental musicians have "jazzed up" melodies familiar to them in the style of their day for centuries, and this team's virtuoso improvisations on Yuletide favorites such as Silver Bells and What Child is This, and their renditions of classical standards such as Bach's setting of In Dulci Jubilo, the exquisite French carol Un Jeune Fillette and the early 17th-century Canzonetta Spirituale sopra alla nanna by Tarquino Merulo will bring together the best of all things jazz and classical.
Dedicated to GEORGE SHANGROW, the third annual Candlelight Concerts continues a tradition which George initiated with countless past Candlelight Christmas Concerts and Evenings of Baroque Music. Chamber music both familiar and new is performed by some of the Northwest's prominent soloists.
Hailed as "ravishing" by the New York Times, Canadian soprano LINDA TSATSANIS has appeared as soloist with the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Auburn Symphony, Pacific Musicworks, Orchestra Seattle, Pacific Baroque Orchestra and for the Early Music Society of the Islands (Victoria, BC), San Francisco Early Music Society, and Magnolia Baroque Festival and many others. MARTIN LUND has played with some of the great blues artists of our time and worked in the studios of LA as a composer, arranger and musician with artists such as Mel Torme and Isacc Hayes. He is equally adept at clarinet, saxophone, flute and piano and directs The One World Music Festival on Orcas Island. GENE NERY has traveled the world performing as a vocalist and guitarist for Princess Cruises. He settled down on Orcas in the 1980's but originally comes from Vancouver, BC. He earned a platinum record award for singing "Above The Northern Lights" on Mannheim Steamroller's CD "A Christmas Song" which also features Johnny Mathis and Olivia Newton John. Flutist JEFFREY COHAN has performed as soloist in 25 countries, both on modern and early transverse flutes from the Renaissance through the present. He is artistic director of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival and the Capitol Hill Chamber Music Festival in Washington, DC.
