Walter, a college professor travels to New York to attend a conference and finds a young couple living in his apartment. He ends up befriending them, especially Tarek, a Syrian street musician. But Tarek is profiled by the police at a subway station and incarcerated, becoming subject to imminent deportation. When Tareks widowed mother appears, Walters connection to this family in distress deepens and his narrowed horizons expand.
