An Evening With Brittany Packnett and ArchCity Defenders
Join us for a conversation with St. Louis's own Brittany Packnett, a nationally reknown advocate for racial and social justice.
An alum of both Washington University in St. Louis and American University, Brittany has been an elementary teacher, legislative staffer, education policy advocate, and executive director of Teach For AmericaSt. Louis. Under her leadership, TFASTL dramatically evolved, launching a local institute, increasing fundraising and diversity, and investing in culturally responsive pedagogy for the 20,000 students in corps member and alumni classrooms. Today, Brittany serves as Teach For America's vice president of National Community Alliances.
Catalyzed by the death of Michael Brown, Brittany is a Ferguson protestor and is honored to serve on President Obama's 21st Century Policing Task Force and the Ferguson Commission, helping bring protestor voice to policy change in the wake of Ferguson. In 2015, Brittany helped launch Campaign Zero, a comprehensive policy platform to end police violence.
Time magazine named Packnett to a 2015 list of "12 New Faces of Black Leadership." She was also named to The Root magazine's 2015 Root 100 list, wherein she was described as "the bridge over turbulent, troubled waters." Additionally, Brittany has been featured in multiple media outlets including The Washington Post, The Guardian, MSNBC, NPR, the BBC, and Ebony Magazine.
ArchCity Defenders (ACD) is a 501(c)3 non-profit civil rights law firm providing holistic legal advocacy to the poor, combating the criminalization of poverty, and fighting state violence against poor people and people of color. ACD uses direct services, impact litigation, and policy and media advocacy as its primary tools to promote justice, protect civil and human rights, and bring about systemic change on behalf of the poor and communities of color directly impacted by the abuses of the legal system.
ACD is the only local public interest law firm whose impact litigation flows organically from our direct services. We help clients get out of a shelter and into housing first and then try to address the systemic issues that got them there. Your generous support will help us house homeless veterans, keep moms and kids in their housing and jobs, and continue to bring impact litigation to end debtors' prisons and cash bail, protect the right to counsel, and fight against the abuses of the legal system.
