Solidarity Harvest Benefit Concert with Noel Paul Stookey
Food AND Medicine proudly presents legendary singer/songwriter Noel Paul Stookey. Noel, "Paul" of Peter, Paul and Mary, and an independent artist, has generously offered to perform a benefit concert for Solidarity Harvest.

Noel Paul Stookey has recorded over 45 albums, both as part of the legendary trio and as a soloist. Prior to the release of his acclaimed ONE & MANY (and digital mini releases) in 2012, he had released three CDs in 2007 alone: Facets of the Jewel, Promise of Love, and Song for Megumi. In addition to his performance life, Stookey oversees Neworld Multimedia, presenting new artists and creating childrens TV shows and music. The royalties from his classic Wedding Song go to the Public Domain Foundation, where nearly $2 million has been put to work for charitable causes. If Stookey has his way, he hopes to make the world a better place by supporting a dialogue of acceptance and inclusion...perhaps his song Love Rules! says it best: ...tryin to be a student of transparency; more of Love and less of me...

He has performed in intimate coffeehouses, at the White House, and in massive stadiums. At the 1963 March on Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech, Peter, Paul and Mary delivered the compelling If I Had a Hammer and Blowin in the Wind. We could not be more thrilled that Noel has offered his time and talents to support our Solidarity Harvest.

Now in its 15th year, Solidarity Harvest provides locally-sourced Thanksgiving meal baskets to families in hard times all across Maine, organized by Food AND Medicine, and sponsored by the Eastern, Western and Southern Maine Labor Councils.

In 2016, 1300 meal baskets were distributed; each basket containing enough food for 8-10 people. Money raised is used to purchase produce from Maine farms, from potatoes to turnips to cranberries - not a single canned item is included.

The project began to support laid off union workers and their families, and still focuses largely on unions, as unions distribute a good number of the baskets. The project has expanded to include other service and recovery organizations and their constituents, such as Penquis, Eastern Area Agency on Aging, Discovery House, CPPC and more. The unions and organizations themselves identify recipients and distribute the baskets as an act of Solidarity, not charity.
