Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Unleashing The Demon Feminine In Art and Activism
Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Unleashing The Demon Feminine In Art and Activism
The archetype of the witch has been an agent of art and activism for centuries. Tracing her legacy as an icon of female power and persecution from the early modern era, this talk will illuminate the history of the witch as a potent feminist symbol. By juxtaposing leading scholarly research on European and American witch hunts with art and pop occulture artifacts, Kristen J. Sollee will undress the witch-as- wicked-woman mythos, showing that although the Divine Feminine has been a tool for spiritual change, it is the Demon Feminine that has been the catalyst for political revolution.
Kristen J. Sollee is the author of Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive and is on faculty at The New School.
This is part of The Satanic Temple Salem weekend October lecture series exploring horror archetypes as metaphors for current social topics and discussions. Every weekend in October will feature a guest speaker on a different horror archetype.
Free with suggested $15 donation. Will livestream to our Satanic Temple Salem page. Limited seating available. Doors closed to admittance after lecture begins.
