Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Chris Coles' Gleam!
Anthony Taddeo- Drums
Kevin Martinez- Bass
Michael Orenstein- Piano
Chris Coles- Saxophones

Chris Coles' Gleam is a quartet that uses a blend of Jazz, Gospel, Latin, and Hip-Hop music to cultivate its sound. Gleam uses current social events as inspiration to write music that is culturally relevant to the times we are living in. Each member in the group are skilled composers and draw from their many experiences to create a sound that is rooted in the tradition of the masters of the past but also looking forward to things and sounds to come.

Chris received his Bachelor Degree in Saxophone Performance from Youngstown State University. It was here that he studied with world-renowned saxophonist and educator Dr. James C. Umble, jazz saxophonist Dr. Kent Englehardt, and jazz bassist and composer Dr. David Morgan. In 2012, Chris received his Master Degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Akron. Chris has performed with many local and international jazz musicians such as, Eddie Baccus Sr., Melvin Burks, Kenny Davis, Glenn Holmes, Bill Ransom, and Cecil Rucker, Grammy Award winner Slide Hampton, Ralph Lalama, and Allen Vizzutti. Coles recently was accepted to perform in Italy with the Ohio Youth Jazz Orchestra. It was here that Coles performed with Wessell Anderson, lead alto saxophonist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Chris also played at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Festival in West Virginia with the Dana Saxophone quartet, performing at the International Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., and premiering a commissioned work by John Hollenbeck at the Whitney Art Museum Composers Workshop. Coles also recorded this work on John Hollenbecks album Rainbow Jimmies released in 2009.

Some of Chris's recent accomplishments include being a participant at The Banff Workshop for Jazz and Creative music in Alberta, Canada. It was there that Chris had the distinct honor of studying with some of the great pioneers in jazz today such as Vijay Iyer, Mark Turner, Imani Izuri, Tia Fuller, Billy Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Zakir Hussain, Somi, Yosvany Terry, and Miles Okazaki to name a few.  Chris is currently based out of Akron, Ohio and is on faculty at Kent State University and the Aurora School of Music.

Pianist and composer Michael Orenstein started studying music at the age of ten. After a couple years of lessons he quickly became interested in jazz and joined his middle school's combo, and soon after, the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble in California. Since
then, his love for jazz has only grown. Through programs like the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, the Jazzschool, and Oberlin conservatory, he has gotten to play with Terrence Blanchard, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Tiger Okoshi, and BiIlly Drewes. Now a Senior at Oberlin, Orenstein studies privately with Dan Wall, Sullivan Fortner, and Robin Eubanks. In 2015 Michael attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative music, where he got to perform his compositions with Ingrid Jensen and Zakir Hussain.

Michael splits his time between living in Cleveland (where he has quickly become a regular at venues like the Bop Stop and Blu Jazz) and in the Bay Area, where he has performed at venues such as Yoshi's, Birdland Oakland, The Sound Room, and the Monterey Jazz
Festival. In 2016, Orenstein's quartet at Oberlin was chosen to represent the jazz program by performing his original composition at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Other awards Orenstein has won for compositions include Best Original-Lead Sheet in Downbeat SMA 2013, Outstanding Composition for Small Ensemble in Downbeat SMA 2017, and an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers award.  In January, Orenstein traveled to India with percussionist Jamey Haddad and nine other Oberlin students to perform and learn about Indian classical music. He also gigged in the Bahamas with bassist Adrian D'Aguilar.

When Michael is not performing, he enjoys teaching in a variety of settings. He has taught at multiple summer programs, including California Jazz Conservatory's Summer Youth Program. He also teaches many students privately, including college students and high
school students.

Anthony Taddeo is a drummer, composer and ODP performing artist currently residing

Anthony currently teaches drums and percussion at Cuyahoga Community College. He
is an active composer and arranger for projects in NYC and Cleveland. He is currently

Upon completing his studies he continued performing and composing in Chicago where he gained experience playing all styles of music and toured nationally with The Chicago Afrobeat Project.
