Bright Young Minds Sunday Sessions
Bright Young Minds Sunday Sessions
Presented in partnership with Visual Thinking Strategies
February 24 and March 31
1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Introducing a new Brower Center public program just for kids! Bright Young Minds offers an an opportunity for children ages 8 to 12 to engage with art through a hands-on drawing/painting session based on the Promise and Peril exhibition.

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) offers an educational curriculum and teaching method which enables students to develop aesthetic and language literacy and critical thinking skills while giving teachers a powerful new technique they can utilize throughout their careers. VTS is also used widely in museum and art center contexts, informing both educational and curatorial practice.  Learn more about VTS.

This program is free. Parents must be present during the event.

Promise and Peril features large-scale paintings and prints from both artists. Kirkland's work, influenced by 16th and 17th century Dutch still lifes, includes two series of paintings, Taxa and Nova. Taxa delves into the biodiversity of past and present, featuring species that are extinct, in decline or that have been brought back from the brink of extinction. Nova, on the other hand, focuses more on the future, exploring plant and animal species discovered over the past two decades and hinting at the possibilities of what could be if we take action to protect our natural resources.

Referencing the style of James Audubon, Jeffrey Long's works evoke the scientific and political, delving into the history of species in the Western United States from Audubon's time forward and emphasizing the back stories of the animals he paints.  Every work is informed by the idea that we as human beings have exploited nature and interfered with the systems that the animals depicted depend upon.
