"A Star Has Burnt My Eye": The Strange Case of Connie Converse
For one night only, critically acclaimed musician Howard Fishman presents a work in progress of his latest tribute to an American songsmith: the unusual life and compelling music of Connie Converse, the singer, guitarist, and composer who self-recorded a remarkable body of work while living on her own in 1950s New York City.
Featuring special guests Susan Oetgen, Charlotte Mundy, Jean Rohe, Anastasia Barzee, Nathan Peck, and Russell Farhang.
"A Star Has Burnt My Eye" had its workshop premiere at Joe's Pub and was subsequently performed at Abrons Arts Center. About Howard:
An acclaimed singer, guitarist, composer and bandleader, Howard Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans soul, Brooklyn grit, open-hearted country, blues, classical, and gospel music through a completely original, experimental aesthetic, to create a sound entirely his own. Whether he is performing his own compositions or drawing on a seemingly endless repertoire of American popular music, Howard has come to be recognized as one of today's most agile interpreters of the American songbook. Fishman's performances combine the exuberance and spontaneity of jazz with a storyteller's sense of drama, emotional depth and play. The All-Music Guide has called him "an important force in creative music," and The New York Times has written that his work "transcends time and idiom."
Howard's tributes to other musicians have included investigations of Lonnie Johnson's late career catalog, Hoagy Carmichael's lesser known work, and a sold-out, three-night marathon interpretation of Bob Dylan and The Band's complete "Basement Tapes" sessions, which subsequently headlined Lincoln Center's American Songbook series.
