Music and the Mind: an evening with Dr. Larry Sherman and BRAVO
Dr. Larry Sherman is an accomplished pianist and a professor of neuroscience at Oregon Health and Science University. He is also president of the Oregon Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. Dr. Sherman has given presentations to audiences around the world (including a recent performance at Severance Hall, home of the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra) on the subject of Music and the Brain.

He has over 80 publications related to brain development and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimers disease and multiple sclerosis. He serves on a number of national scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health, the Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Programs, and others. He has made numerous television appearances, discussing various topics related to neuroscience. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and Portland Monthly Magazine recognized Dr. Sherman as one of the most innovative people in the State of Oregon. He was also the 2012 Teacher of the Year at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine.

100% of your ticket purchase and gifts made at this benefit concert will help provide BRAVO's intensive music programs for children who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity. BRAVO is the first El Sistema-inspired program in Oregon and now serves over 500 students at four high-poverty schools in North Portland with introductory and intensive music education programs. BRAVO students have performed for the Governor, alongside Joshua Bell and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and they have shared the stage at the Schnitz with the Oregon Symphony and with Black Violin.

BRAVO students have demonstrated better school attendance, fewer behavior referrals, and higher test scores in reading and math compared to their peers in the schools we serve. Our preliminary program impact evaluation supports the case that studying a musical instrument is good for brain development.

Both Dr. Sherman and BRAVO students will perform at this event.
