The Women of Reynolda House & Graylyn Mansion Tour
Overview:  The fascinating women of Reynolda House and Graylyn Mansion, each with their amazing stories are the inspiration of this wonderful winter art and garden tour.

With tours of Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Graylyn Mansion and a beautiful buffet lunch at Graylyn, this day is planned to lift our winter spirits and prepare us for spring's arrival.

Reynolda House: Designed, built and run by Katherine Smith Reynolds, wife of successful businessman R.J. Reynolds, this endeavor included a modern working farm, formal gardens, a school, a lake, and a village as well as the 64 room cottage.

This amazing woman handled every detail from buying the land, crafting the vision, selecting the designs, and running the day-to-day operations of this progressive enterprise.  Later her daughter, Mary Reynolds Babcock and granddaughter, Barbara Babcock Millhouse each added their own touches that contributed to the longevity and success that Reynolda House is today.

Museum of American Art: In modern times Reynolda holds an impressive collection of American fine art as well as a costume collection of over 700 articles of clothing worn by two Reynolds generations from 1890 to 1965.

Graylyn Mansion: Eighty seven acres bought from Mrs. Reynolds in 1925 became another great "country house" for Nathalie Lions Gray, wife of Bowman Gray.

Completed in 1932, this 60 room estate was far grander than the simple Reynolda cottage but the story again involved the struggle of a widow who managed to run the family affairs, raise children and keep the dream of their husbands intact.

A beautiful buffet lunch will be served at the mansion followed by a docent lead tour of the house.

Reynolda Gardens: To wrap up our day of beauty, we will stop by for a private look inside the 1913 Lord and Burnham greenhouse and conservatory and working green houses to see the orchids in all their winter glory.

The tour departs from a convenient Triangle (Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill) location to be determined. There will be parking available from departure.
