Stop Kiss
Nasty Theatre Company was founded by four fierce females who all graduated from Oklahoma City University. We have theatre backgrounds and wanted to dive back in and make art that is passionate and that we can be proud of. Thus, Nasty Theatre Company was born. Nasty Theatre Company's mission is to produce culturally relevant and thought-provoking theatre, in an environment for all artists, that creates a positive dialogue and inspires change. We are influenced by those who march to the beat of their own drum, who want to see better things happen in the world, and who are, yes, a little nasty. In picking our first show, we knew it had to be one that celebrates women and diversity, has a positive message and is pertinent today. We chose Stop Kiss, a play about two women who explore their true feelings for the first time and endure backlash and judgment rather than support. These two women decide to be true to themselves in spite of this and we wanted to share their story and remind our audiences to love who they are and one another.

Its easy to think, It's 2017, things have already gotten so much better! While certain conditions have improved in America since the Stonewall Riots in 1969, there is much progress that still needs to be made. Take a look at Chechen, Russia, where gay men are being detained in detention centers and tortured. Take a look at Kenya, Ethiopia, Pakistan, India and over 25 other countries in which being gay is considered illegal, not to mention the 10 countries in which it is punishable by death. Take a look at Texas, whose governor signed a bill allowing state-funded adoption and foster care agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples, and would also allow the practice of conversion therapy. According to research done by the Trevor Project, the rate of suicide attempts is 4 times greater for LGB youth and 2 times greater for questioning youth than that of straight youth, and that isnt even including transgender youth. Past crusaders have helped pave the way for LGBT rights, but it is up to us to keep the fight going and ensure a better future for generations to come. We at Nasty Theatre Company plan to advocate these rights and beliefs with our production of Stop Kiss in more ways than one. On opening night, we will donate half of our ticket sales to the National Center for Lesbian Rights, an organization dedicated to LGBT rights and protection through litigation, legislation, policy and public education.
