IRT Presents- Meta-Phys Ed.'s WakeSing
IN RESIDENCE: January 16, 2018- February 5, 2018

WakeSing is an original performance work based on Clifford Odets 1935 play Awake and Singand zombies. (Contemporary zombie film and biblical texts about the resurrection of the dead).

Set in a vandalized cemetery as the dead begin to rise, WakeSing is a meditation on Wokeness and wakefulness; a genre bending performance about the tension between middle-class aspiration and revolutionary vision.

Awake and Sing is the story of a second generation, Jewish family living in the Bronx during the depression, waking up from the American dream. Odets borrows the title of his play from the biblical prophet Isiahs description of the resurrection of the dead at the beginning of the messianic era. It is both literal, and a metaphor for personal and collective awakening and resurrection.

Contemporary Zombie films are about humans negotiating power in the absence of social systems. Notably, George Romeros genre defining film Night of the Living Dead is really about a a white woman, a black man and an angry white racist man stuck in house together trying to fight off zombies.

Meta-Phys Ed. creates original performance works for theater that explore the relationship between religion, spirituality, culture and politics.

PLEASE DONATE TO IRT THEATER

IRT Theater is a grassroots laboratory for independent theater and performance in New York City, providing space and support to a new generation of artists. Tucked away in the old Archive Building in Greenwich Village, IRTs mission is to build a community of emerging and established artists by creating a home for the development and presentation of new work. Some of the artists we have supported include Young Jean Lee, Reggie Watts and Mike Daisey.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts and The Nancy Quinn Fund, a project of ART-NY.
