Strung Together: A Night of World Music Improvisation
Diaspora Arts Connection proudly presents a creative, cross-cultural collaboration (Collaborative Project 2017), featuring a group of string musicians, each with a background in a tradition of improvisatory music(s) from different musical cultures in presenting their co-compositions of original culturally-eclectic music. Led by the UK-based composer and guitar player Rich Perks, gifted musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area, Faraz Minooei on santoor, Sirvan Manhoub on oudi, and Raman Osman on saz, will create a night of pure musical magic for us.

About the artists:
As both a guitarist and composer Rich exhibits a keen interest in anything unusual, progressive and innovative. As well as being an active gigging musician in the commercial industry, he performs much contemporary, experimental and improvised music, specialising in fretless electric guitar.
Rich completed his PhD research at Brunel University in 2013, submitting a portfolio of compositions and accompanying thesis entitled, 'Combining Musical Identities Through Composition and Improvisation'. He is a Lecturer in Music Performance at the University of Kent; Lecturer in Popular Music at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (London); and Associate Lecturer of Guitar at Brunel University (London).
After graduating from Southampton University in the summer of 2003, Rich moved back to London and joined several function bands, with which he performed many gigs all over the UK. In the autumn of that year Rich enrolled at the Guitar Institute, on the degree programme, to study his instrument further under Shaun Baxter and Iain Scott, where he graduated in June 2006. Faraz Minooei: Faraz Minooei Was born in Tehran and began playing santur at the young age of nine. While studying with Behnam Mehrabi, he discovered a deep spiritual desire to study music, seeing music as an "unexplainable souvenir from the eternal truth". Faraz received his B.A. from San Francisco State University in 2008 as a Nagle Scholar and the first World/Jazz music major with santur as his primary instrument! As a full-time musician, Faraz is a performer, composer, ethno-musicologist and teacher. He views studying music as a never-ending mission. In view of that, he has also had the good fortune to study with masters such as M. R. Lotfi, H. Omoumi, Royal Hartigan, Hafez Modirzadeh, Michael Dessen, Kojiro Umezaki and Christopher Dobrian.
Since 2006, he has lectured and performed at many universities including SFSU, UCI, UCLA, UCSC Stanford University and at the Society of Ethnomusicology. He is the founder of Echomerz Ensemble, and has performed with noted ensembles in the United Sates, among which was his collaboration in 2009 with Yo Yo Ma and Kayhan Kalhor in the Silk Road Ensemble (for the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Center) and the collaboration as a composer and santur player with the film director Bahram Beyzaie for two different plays of Jana & Baladour and Ardaviraf's Report.
Recipient of numerous scholarships and grants, he earned his Masters of Fine Arts degree in music with emphasis in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology from the University of California in Irvine. His thesis, "Abstracting" Iranian Classical Music, challenges the traditional practice of Iranian Classical Music to introduce innovative and transformative functions of the music in contemporary society. Sirvan Manhoubi: Sirvan started his musical journey at thirteen when he started taking Ta^r/Seh-Ta^r lessons under supervision of master Keivan Saket and master Behrooz Hemati.
He later became interested in Oud, attending master Arsalan Kamkar's classes and choosing Oud as his primary Instrument.
He also significantly benefited from Courses offered by Masters Mohamadrez Lotfi (Radif Navazi-Iranian classical music repertoire), Mehran Rohani (Priciples and history of music),and Siamak Jahangiri (Improvisation and Analysis of Radif). Musical activities :

* Cooperation with master Ardeshir Kamkar.
* Forming Bamdad music ensemble focusing on Kurdish and Iranian Classical music
Bamdad Ensemble performed many concerts with renowned Iranian singers such as Bijan Kamkar and Aziz Shahrokh. Sirvan is a MA graduate of archaeology from Tehran university. He has migrated to United States in 2015 and has been active in teaching and performing Iranian Classical and Kurdish music. He also cooperated with Writer/Director Bahram Bezaei, as composer and Ta^r Player for his most recent play Tarabnameh produced by Stanford Iranian Studies in 2016.
Raman Osman: Raman Osman is a Kurdish composer and master tembûr (saz) musician from Al-Hasaka, Syria. He is a self-taught saz player and singer since he was eleven years old. In his early age he was exposed to a variety of music and cultural sources like Kurdish, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Armenian, Assyrian and others.
He has developed his own style in playing saz benefiting from the flexibility of his instrument. Raman has performed Kurdish music and songs at a variety of venues, including the Damascus Opera House, and several universities in Syria.
Raman currently lives in Northern California where he regularly performs concerts of Kurdish music as a solo artist, as well as with artists from various world music traditions. Raman Osman performed as a guest artist with the UCSB Middle-East Music and Dance Ensemble for the fall concert 2014. Other performances including many concerts in Agoura Hills, Topanga, Berkeley, San Jose, Davis, Oakland and San Francisco.
