San Luis Obispo City Firefighters Ball
In partnership with the San Luis Obispo City YMCA, the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department Local 3523, is hosting their 6th annual firefighters ball for charity. The Firefighters Association regularly hosts charity events to benefit worthy nonprofit organizations that in turn benefit our community and this year we are pleased to support the John W. Callahan Heart Safe Project.
The goal of the John W. Heart Safe Project is to save lives by placing Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) throughout the community of San Luis Obispo and increase awareness and education about the use and effectiveness of AED's.
AED use can make the difference between life and death. According to the American Heart Association, it's estimated that more than 95 percent of cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital. A victim's chance of survival is reduced by 7 to 10 percent with every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation. Nearly 60 percent of all cardiac arrests are witnessed, so if an AED is nearby, chances the patient will receive defibrillation therapy is improved. It is estimated that improved access to AED's could save 40,000 lives a year in the U.S. alone-the equivalent of a cure for breast cancer.
100% of the proceeds from this event will support the acquisition and dissemination of AED's throughout the county of San Luis Obispo as well as provide supplies and training to ensure their maximum effectiveness.
