Session 5 IN PERSON - Birthworker Inclusivity Training Series
Consent and Childbirth + A Look at Sex Work - We know about the importance of medical consent during labor. How well are we incorporating consent into our practices?

Our fifth session will cover two different topics. Our primary focus will be to review the role of consent in the healthcare setting. Well look at how to ensure that your client gets complete information about any potential intervention, and then gives full consent to any care provided by the healthcare team. Its also vitally important that both doulas and midwives remember to obtain consent before we provide any support or care. Because we know ourselves to be compassionate and well-intentioned, it sometimes happens that we offer comfort measure or care techniques without verbal consent. Usually, our instincts in these situations are spot on, but occasionally, each of us will miss the mark. Well practice several different scenarios in pairs and small groups to get comfortable with the language of advocacy and consent.

During this session, well also spend a little time discussing sex work and its impact on pregnancy and birth. As a birthworker and sexuality educator who is a supporter of sex worker rights, I have spent time researching the ways that sex work and family life intersect. Its imperative to remember that all people are deserving of quality care and respect from their healthcare team. Well spend a few minutes unpacking cultural beliefs about sex work, and looking at what risks to pregnancy may occur as a result of occupational hazard. Well also discuss how to effectively advocate for a client who is also a sex worker when discrimination is encountered in a healthcare setting.

B.I.T.S. program overview:

Birthworkers are in a singular position to provide respectful, inclusive care to diverse families. When a new family is celebrated for its uniqueness, rather than encouraged to fit in or hide, they are able to thrive together with dignity. Facilitating families that are free from shame should be high on our list of objectives as birthworkers.

This six part training will provide insight and context for working with families where one or both parents are sexual minorities. For a variety of reasons, these people are unable to be transparent with other healthcare providers. Because we know that the best care, and especially the best outcomes, are achieved through frank, honest communication, it is vital that we strive to include as many members of our community as possible. Empowering, uplifting births are possible for all people, regardless of gender, orientation, relationship status, vocation, or previous life experiences.

You can register to take this training in person and online. In person and online sessions will be held simultaneously. If you have missed some of the sessions, but still want to register for the whole series, you will be given access to the recordings of the earlier sessions.

Regular tickets are $30 per session, or $150 if you register for the entire series (a savings of $30).
