RISE UP! Songs of Resistance and Love from Asia and Around the World
Gay Asian Pacific Alliance Men's Chorus presents: Rise Up! Songs of Love and Resistance. Saturday, Sept. 9, 8pm First Unitarian Church of Oakland 685 14th Street, Oakland, CA 94612 GAPA Men's Chorus presents "RISE UP! - Songs of Resistance and Love." Join us as we share a multilingual selection of songs that express the universal fight for love and against tyranny. Music Director Randy Kikukawa will lead the men of the Chorus through a choral repertoire rooted in Asian Pacific musical traditions, as well as songs that speak directly to our experience as queer Asian & Pacific Islander (API) men. We are honored to have the guest performance of the World Harmony Chorus Ensemble who will round out our theme with beautiful lyrics from other parts of our globe. This will the Chorus first concert at home in nearly three years. In 2015, the GAPA Mens Chorus presented a concert in Taiwan with choruses from six Asian countries at Hand in Hand, the first ever Asian LGBT choral conference. Last year, the Chorus was the only American API choral group among hundreds at the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses festival in Denver. We are proud and excited to be able to share a full program with our home community this year. A significant cultural component of the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) in San Francisco, the GAPA Mens Chorus was formed in 1989 to provide a showcase for the vocal music talents of gay and bisexual Asian & Pacific Islander men. Its multilingual repertoire includes songs in Mandarin, Tagalog, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Indonesian, Hawaiian, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian and English, among others. Particularly effective in outreaching to the mainstream Asian Pacific population, as well as the broader LGBT and non-Asian communities, the Chorus promotes GAPA's goals by highlighting diversity and gay Asian Pacific visibility at its every appearance. We are also thrilled and honored to feature our special guests: World Harmony Ensemble. World Harmony Ensemble was formed in 2014 by members of World Harmony Chorus, as a small offshoot. World Harmony Ensemble sings a cappella arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs from various cultures throughout the world. Betsy Blakeslee directs World Harmony Ensemble as well as the Oakland branch of the larger chorus. All seats are general admission. Online advance tickets are $15 Tickets may be available at the door, unless sold out (cash only): - $20 general admission - $10 students with valid student ID For more information, please visit: www.gapamc.org or www.facebook.com/gapachorus Or email: gapachorus@aol.com
