New Horizon's Big Band of Tualatin at the Aurora Colony Vineyard Winery
New Horizon's Big Band of Tualatin will be playing at the Aurora Colony Vineyard Winery.
The New Horizons Big Band of Tualatin, Oregon is a community band directed by Brad Davis and managed by Suzanne Short.
The New Horizons Big Band of Tualatin (Oregon) is a community big band and was just an idea in the summer of 2013. The band is affiliated with the New Horizons music program, founded in the early 1990s by Roy Ernst, professor emeritus at Eastman School of Music. His mission was to make playing music in an orchestra/band/symphony available to more people. (see www.newhorizonsmusic.org)
Suzanne Short organized a New Horizons Jazz Band in Mesa, AZ in 2007. After returning to the Portland Metro Area in 2011, she started thinking about doing the same thing here, but with a Big Band concept.
She and Brad Davis had played in the same band for several years in Portland and together they hatched the idea of forming a band for musicians who didn't have any interest in making it professionally, or who maybe hadn't played for decades. Brad is a professional musician and bandleader with 35 years of experience and Suzanne had managed, promoted and played in big and small bands for 15 years.
The networking, advertising and word of mouth began in the summer of 2013 and September 9, 2013, rehearsals began at the Juanita Pohl Center (senior center) in Tualatin, OR.
The band has male and female musicians and more experienced and less experienced band members who range in age from 27 to 92. They have male and female vocalists. Some have performed for years while others haven't played since high school and are now retired.
Their arrangements range from those of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, and vocals made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Forrest, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and more too numerous to mention.
