In this dynamic, hands-on workshop, three 1 hour sessions will provide you with information on communicating legal concepts and within legal contexts more effectively. 3 hours of MCLE credits provided. CIMCE approval in progress.
The sessions will include:
I. Using Visuals to Provide Legal Information and Improve Access People accessing the court system need good information and support to navigate the courts complex processes. Yet many of the people who need the courts help are traumatized or under significant stress. As an attorney-mediator, and lifelong doodler, Julia Weber will speak on the effects of trauma and what we can do to alleviate stress as we deliver services. She will review the benefits of using more visual language to communicate with clients and litigants, and provide concrete tips and tricks for communicating effectively with visuals even for committed non-drawing professionals.
II. Do people read what you write?
Most writers assume that court users needing information will read their materials because they need that information to accomplish their task. But field-testing shows they are mistaken. If the writing is impenetrable, the court user may try to find other ways to get the information needed or abandon the task entirely. As a professional editor and readability expert, Maria Mindlin will show you how to really make your writing useful!
III. Lost in translation: Communicating effectively with LEPs
Our courts and legal providers are seeing increasing numbers of limited-English proficient (LEP) court users trying to access the legal system. With language access expansion in state courts and federal and state requirements to provide language access, it is critical that every part of the system be able to communicate effectively with these court users. As an attorney with over 20 years experience working with LEP populations and a federally-certified Spanish interpreter, Cristina Llop will help you be responsive to the language needs of your clients and customers to ensure their meaningful participation in the resolution of their legal issues.
