Death and dying is topic we avoid talking about in our society, yet planning for it is crucially important if we want to have our wishes honored.

This course will explain what you need to know about the end of life options for you and your loved ones,  and how to achieve them.

We will discuss in-depth the California "End of Life Option Act," a statute that allows certain terminally ill adults to request and obtain a prescription for medication to end their lives in a peaceful manner. The Act outlines the process of obtaining such medication, including safeguards to protect both patients and physicians. Governor Jerry Brown signed the Act on October 5, 2015, and it went into effect on June 9, 2016.  This law is similar to Oregon's Death With Dignity law.

Dr. Robinson will also tell you everything you need to know about preparing a Living Will, a must have for each of us.  Copies of the California Health Care Directive form (that you can take home and fill out) will be available. Be sure to bring questions and comments.

If you would like to read a book about this subject, Dr. Robinson suggestsThe Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End-of-Life Care byAngelo E. Volandes. She will tell you about more books that you can read to help you understand these topics.

Dr. Susan C. Robinson retired from the practice of medicine in 2015. Since then she has been active as a volunteer for Compassion and Choices doing educational outreach. She lives in Paso Robles with her husband and two dogs; they are all happy to be living in California where using medicine to aid in dying is now legal.
