OKC Improv Workshop: Let's Sing about It! (Musical Workshop with Kyle Gossett)
Have a song in your heart? Ever wanted to just burst out in song in a scene, or in life? This workshop is for you! Improvisers, actors, singers, musicians, and curious citizens are welcome to take this course designed to teach the basics of musical improvisation. Students will learn song structure, rhyme scheme, and general musicality, all with the goal of learning how to boil a scene down to its "critical mass," or the point where a character can no longer speak, so they must sing. Every character has a point of view and a song they can sing, and this workshop is designed to find just that!
Prerequisites: Level 1 or permission from the instructor
Instructor bio: Kyle Gossett is OKC Improv's resident musical improvisational guru. In addition to being a musician, Kyle is an improviser, an actor, director, designer, and general creative mastermind. Kyle has studied piano since late 2001, and voice since he was a child. He attended Oklahoma City University's Bass School of Music from the years of 2007-2011, studying voice under Rebecca Salter, Charles Koslowske and Leslie Flannigan. There he learned music theory, piano, conducting and composition, in addition to being a performer, stage manager, director, and crew member both with the Opera and Music Theatre Company and TheatreOCU. In late 2011, he founded Ballpark Theatre Company, the narrative improv supertroupe he continues to direct and provide musical scores for. His most recent endeavor is creating and directing Night Rhymers, a musical improv-variety troupe. Additionally, Kyle plays music for Twinprov, Villain: The Musical, and Off-Book: Musical Morsels. He teaches musical improv in addition to narrative improv, and serves as OKC Improv's technical director. Outside of OKC Improv, Kyle is a member of the comedy band, The Memepunks, and has served as an actor and musician for Reduxion Theatre Company in such productions as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hair, Hamlet, and Much Ado About Nothing. Kyle has played with dynamic performers such as Jill Bernard and Loungeasaurus-Rex.
