Presented by the California Stage...

Renowned indie performing-arts troupe, the bombastic Vespertine Circus, has done it again with their latest original production, Important Business.

Jam packed with acrobatics, juggling, clowning, aerial-artistry, & dance, this is one show you don't want to miss. Coming to the Cal Stage for one weekend only!

A cast of 6 clowns set a new bar for circus-theatre in their delightfully surreal, entirely unexpected office comedy with enough silliness to entertain audiences of all ages.

Starring:

Brian Feraru as Jack Kastner
Bunny Zlotnik as Jezebel Wilder
SAM Luckey as Bethany Prideaux
Eli Cherweznik as Elijah Leone
Keely Beyries as Nastasja Volenko
Danielle Funkadelica as Gale

From the director -

"Important Business is, first and foremost, a show about perception.

Initially, it is the juxtaposition between the seemingly mundane and drab, often uncreative environment that corporate offices are imagined (all to frequently, with some accuracy) to be - and the whimsical, magical, otherworldly nature of circus, that strikes the viewer as strange. This is to say little of the parallel between the non-physical tasks generally at hand when working at a desk and the extremely athletic nature of all things circus; indeed, the left and right brain, set at palatable odds with one another, lay the set for our story.

A little dry, a little understated, the pageantry of Circus as we know it is stripped away, and the performers are all too human, incidentally emphasizing the oddness of their various skills. This contrast in of itself may be enough to entertain, to poke-fun at or otherwise satirize, filing Important Business neatly into a surrealist genre, but where the magic lies is in its simple explanation: magic is always present, but usually unobserved.

Each character in the show displays a spectrum of emotions, favors certain characters over others, expresses discontent, hope, ambition, fondness and irritation, and each time sadness or anger takes the lead it is the direct result of misunderstanding, non-observance, and general obliviousness. Bored characters are surrounded by magic, and witness none of it. Angry relationships develop on colossal miscommunication and nonobservance, and the audience alone plays the one person who witnesses each character in completion.

In the beginning, the whole of the audience - and most importantly, you, are addressed as an individual, rather than a crowd. The unseen character, the wisest of all, sits and observes one Monday, and in so doing understands the source of anger or frustration, empathizing (we hope) with all that transpires and becoming more and more aware that each of us are filled with the potential to thrive and nourish one another, and that yes, ball-point-pens, desks, and instant coffee can all be magical things.

Let us change the way you think of offices, rubber-band-balls, answering-phones, board meetings, and of course, one another."
