Melting Away - Peoria
MELTING AWAY (Israel) Director: Doron Eran Drama - 90 minutes, Hebrew w/English Subtitles
Screenings: Harkins Arrowhead Fountains 18, Peoria Mon. Feb. 18th, 7 PM
A wrenching family relationship, bold realities of transgender and gay culture, the pain of seeking to recapture a lost past, the facing and coming to terms with dying. Here is a film that will draw you into some of life's most emotional and challenging complexities, a human drama ripe for melodrama, yet never exploitive, and only rarely allowing for the deeply rooted emotions that the characters clearly convey to bubble to the surface and explode. Thoughtful, skillful direction of restrained, beautifully authentic performances instead provide for intimate, sometimes tender, even humorous scenes of home life, a sterile hospital room, parent, child, spouse, and peer interplay. All of this in the context of subject matter we rarely see treated in Israeli films. Leaving this film, your involvement with it will not be MELTING AWAY.
Guest Speaker:
Gregory Joorabchi currently serves on the board of AVIV of Arizona, a spiritual and social group serving the LGBT community in greater Phoenix. Gregory's "coming-out" story mirrors much of what is displayed in this movie. Life events have given Gregory a determination to advocate for youths who need to know that "life does get better". Gregory and his partner of six years have been volunteers at local gay pride parades and Rainbow festivals, helping to contribute to a more diverse Phoenix.
