Synopsis

Aging bachelor Don Pasquale wants to marry and produce an heir so as to disinherit his nephew Ernesto who refused Pasquales choice of bride since in love instead with Norina. Dr. Malatesta suggests Don Pasquale marry his (nonexistent) beautiful sister and pretends to arrange a meeting. Ernesto arrives, again refuses Pasquales choice and is disinherited. Malatesta explains to Norina his plot that she impersonate his sister in a phony marriage to Pasquale. Shes glad of any scheme to help her and Ernesto. Ernesto, who knows nothing of this plot, is desperate over this seeming loss of Norina and considers exile. Pasquale is enchanted to meet Norina disguised as Sofronia and wants to marry at once. Ernesto bursts in and accuses Norina of being unfaithful until Malatesta explains the plot. The phony marriage contract is signed and Pasquale signs over his fortune to Norina, who switches character from shy bride to flirt. Pasquale is shocked and the others amused. Norina then makes every effort to spend Pasquales money. He threatens her with divorce. She drops a letter indicating a rendezvous with a lover that night in the garden. Malatesta tells Pasquale they will hide and catch Sofronia misbehaving. In the garden Ernesto and Norina declare their love. Before Malatesta and Pasquale arrive, Ernesto hides and Norina resumes her charade as Sofronia. Malatesta announces that Ernesto is about to introduce his bride, Norina. Sofronia declares she will not share a house with another woman and threatens to leave. This pleases Pasquale who then agrees that Ernesto marry Norina. The plot is the revealed and Pasquale accepts it with good humor.
