Joanna - Peoria
JOANNA (Poland) Director: Feliks Falk Drama 109 minutes, Polish/German/French w/English Subtitles
Screenings: Harkins Arrowhead Fountains, Peoria Tues. Feb. 19th, 7 PM
A tense, at times bleak mood combines with constrained performances, in a setting of historical authenticity, and all of this and more, is filmed with a muted color palette. The film is Joanna. The setting is a Polish city under Nazi occupation. The story, well, you will want to come to see for yourself this compelling narrative with its entangling threads: Jewish child/Catholic protector; absolute moral behavior/relevant human choices; Nazi commands/ "own peoples" demands; courage, generosity, and love/luck, pure luck. As if not quite enough, brilliant Polish Director Feliks Falk, earlier associated with the Cinema of Moral Anxiety movement of the 1970's, sends us from the theatre with a dilemma: what does he mean by the ending?
Speaker: Paul Weiser, Holocaust Expert
Paul Wieser is a 15-year Board Member of the Phoenix Holocaust Survivors' Association, a Mandel Fellow of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, author of numerous articles, contributing author to two books on the Holocaust, and a former director of the Braun Holocaust Institute-Blick Center for Holocaust Studies for the ADL.
