Dr. John Noffsinger on Charles Dickens
John Noffsinger was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in suburban Maryland. After graduating from Kalamazoo College with a degree in English, he earned an M.A. and a Ph. D., also in English, from the University of Virginia. In graduate school he specialized in the Victorian novel and wrote his dissertation on character development in the early novels of Charles Dickens. He then began a career teaching English in various independent schools in Virginia, including North Cross, Norfolk Academy, and St. Annes-Belfield. During a one-year sabbatical from teaching high school, he taught Medieval and Modern Humanities at Virginia Tech, and later he continued teaching part-time both at Tech and at Old Dominion University. In 2014 he retired from teaching and now likes to spend time taking walks with his wife, Mary, and visiting his daughter and grandsons in Florida. Over the past ten years he has also written hundreds of book reviews for Kirkus Reviews.
