Europe East West Singing Workshop
Join us for a wonderful A Cappella Folk Feast Day led by dynamic duo Sally Davies and Dom Stichbury.
With the explosion in Folk music and the explosion of choirs in this country what better place to put them together?
With an ear for the compelling harmonies of Georgian and Balkan singing traditions, Sally has created thrilling arrangements of some of Britain's most beautiful folk songs, infusing them with the pathos and the power of less than predictable modal harmonies. We will be singing songs from all three traditions. Songs will be taught by ear at a moderate pace. No need to read music. Word-sheets will be provided.
SALLY DAVIES Sally is a choir leader with a dynamic and infectious style, who delights in passing on the repertoire she loves both to singers and audience. She directs 2 choirs The Cecil Sharp House Choir at the centre of The English Folk Dance and Song Society in Camden who sing mostly Sallys own distinctive arrangements of folk songs from the British Isles and The Wing-It Singers in Hackney whose repertoire is largely Balkan and Georgian. Both choirs perform regularly to packed houses. For some time she co-led the London Georgian choir, Maspindzeli and has made several trips to Georgia with them. She also writes and plays music for theatre and performs regularly with her vocal quartet 4Folk and in the duo Bow and Bellows playing fiddle, baritone horn and singing with the accordionist Martina Schwarz
"Her arrangements seem to me inspired". Frankie Armstrong
"What will not be familiar are the 4 part arrangements for community choir. Sally's skill for this is uplifting". Jacqueline Patten in a review of Cecil Sharp House Choir CD
DOMINIC STICHBURY Dominic has been facilitating group singing since 2009. Hes led workshops and founded singing experiences for community groups, office workers, school children, vulnerable people, prisoners as well as professional musicians.
In 2013 Dominic founded Chaps Choir to encourage more men to join singing communities. In response to its success he recently set-up Bellow Fellows, the first accessible and inclusive male community singing chorus in London.
Previously Dominic has led and arranged music for The Pop-up Choir, The Landmark Singers, Euphonix Choir, Barnes Community Choir and run workshops for Voicelab, Southbank Centre, Spitalfields Music, Sadlers Wells, The Arvon Trust, Opera North, The Orpheus Centre and other educational organisations around the UK.
Dominic sings with the London Vocal Project, directed by jazz composer and educator Pete Churchill. The choir has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Micha Paris, Jon Hendricks & Norma Winstone. Since 2015 he has been singing with Australian male troupe The Spooky Mens Chorale and its smaller British incarnation 'A Fistful of Spookies. Dominic has worked with Sally Davies in the quartet 4Folk, bringing to life Sallys treasure trove of harmonised english folk songs.
As an arranger and MD he has collaborated with soul singer Omar, Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld), Daylight Music, Samantha Whates, Hattie Webb & the Irene Taylor Trust.
