South Pacific
This musical, set during WWII, premiered on Broadway in 1949 & ran for 1,925 performances, winning 10 Tonys. Mary Martin & Enzio Pinza were the stars. The revival in 2008 won 7 Tonys.  In 1958, a movie was made, starring Mitzi Gaynor & Rossaro Brazzi. The plot is based on James Michener's novel, "Tales of the South Pacific". The story involves an American nurse who falls in love with a middle aged expatriate French plantation owner, but she struggles to accept his mixed race children. A secondary romance between a U.S.lieutenant and a Tonkinese woman explores his fears of the social consequences should he marry her.  Several of the memorable songs from this show are: "Some Enchanted Evening","Younger than Springtime" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair". A romantic story with a powerful message.
