Goitse with special guests Owen Meehan, Shelley Phillips & William Coulter
Last February, the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay rolled the dice in presenting Goitse, a group few had heard of and even fewer could correctly pronounce (for the record, it is 'Gwitcha' and is an informal greeting in the Irish meaning 'Come here'). That concert by the hot, new band of students from the Traditional Irish Music and Dance School at the University of Limerick was pure magic, as indeed were the rest of the concerts on their debut U.S. tour. As a result, Goitse attracted the attention of Mr. Irish Music, Donal Lunny, who produced their newly released second CD, 'Transformed,' with early reviews heaping a tremendous outpouring of praise, including from Irish Music Magazine, 'Transformed sees Goitse transfer from the periphery to Big Leagues' and from Folkworld, 'Definitely a 2012 Top Ten Album.' Goitse displays an infectious, youthful enthusiasm in their zestful, high-energy performnces with an impressive musical maturity from members, vibrant fiddler and stunning singer Aine McGeeney, 4-time All-Ireland Banjo Champion and 3-time All-Ireland Mandolin Champion James Harvey, All-Ireland Piano Accordion Champion Tadhg O'Meachair, 2-time All-Ireland Bodhran Champion Colm Phelan and gifted guitarist Conal O'Kane. As Dublin's Hot Press wrote about Goitse, 'Those fretting about the future of Irish trad can rest more easily at night.' Truly an outstanding outfit whose future is all ahead of them, the bewitching Goitse is out to getcha so come hear 'Come here' and see what all the fuss is about. The concert will open with a special set from Owen Meehan, a young man from Santa Cruz who was the winner in his 15-18 age group in the tin whistle category at the Fleadh Cheoil na Eireann in 2009 and returned to Ireland the following year for the same prestigious competion where he placed third in the flute, joined by local heroes, Grammy-winning guitarist William Coulter and Celtic harpist Shelley Phillips.
