Wasted: Sustainable Cooking + Mixology Competition
Specialty Produce and Waste Not SD are hosting our inaugural event, Wasted: Sustainable Cooking + Mixology Competition to benefit Kitchens for Good.
For 30 years Specialty Produce has been providing produce to restaurants, hotels, food trucks, and catering companies all over San Diego County. Last year we partnered with the San Diego Food Bank to launch our food recovery program, Waste Not SD. We collect surplus food from participating accounts as well as imperfect produce from our warehouse and help distribute the food to our nonprofit partners.
San Diego's top chefs and mixologist will be challenged to take an item they're currently throwing away in their kitchen and turn it into a bite-sized dish or drink. Guests will vote on a winner in three categories: savory, pastry, and mixology. With the help of Closing the Loop this event will be as close to zero waste as possible so come prepared to eat with your hands- no plates or silverware allowed. Leave the kiddos at home, you must be 21 and over to attend. Guests will also get to mingle with and learn about some of the nonprofits working to address food waste and hunger in San Diego.
Competitors include: George's at the Cove, The Land & Water Company, Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub, The Cork and Craft, Addison, Kettner Exchange, Snakeoil Cocktail Company and others.
The beneficiary, Kitchens for Good is a nonprofit that provides a 12-week culinary training program for people who face barriers to employment due to former incarceration, homelessness, abuse, or addiction. They also provide catering services. Love to cook? Sign up for their Community Cooking Days where every Monday volunteers and Kitchens for Good students prepare nutritious meals for those facing food insecurity.
Closing the Loop will help make this event as close to zero waste as possible. This family and veteran owned company works tirelessly to find creative solutions to San Diego's recycling and composting problems including the use of styrofoam eating worms and meat eating black solider flies. They provide recycling, compost, oil recycling, grease trap cleaning and other services for both residential and commercial businesses.
