SARAH DAVACHI & "SH-2000" - LIVE AT KNOX UNITED CHURCH JUNE 14 2017
Beatroute, Major Minor Music Project & THD Booking are proud to welcome back Sarah Davachi for a special one-off performance at Knox United Church on Wednesday, June 14th 2017. Sarah will be performing on one of the largest pipe organs in Canada - it is a large four-manual Casavant Frères organ with 95 stops and over 5000 pipes. She will also be joined by a string trio for this performance. This will be her only Canadian date of 2017 and we are lucky she is able to squeeze in her first Calgary show since Sled Island 2016 between her European & Australian summer tours. Opening the show will be local ambient synthesizer duo, "SH-2000". This will be an early show that begins at 7pm sharp. Tickets are $15 at the door or in advance via Brown Paper Tickets available June 1 2017. All ages welcome!
===== SARAH DAVACHI
Sarah Davachi (b. 1987, Calgary, Canada) holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of Calgary, and a master's degree in electronic music and recording media from Mills College in Oakland, California. As a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music, Davachi's compositional projects are primarily concerned with disclosing the antiquated instruments and forgotten sonics of a bygone era in analog synthesis, with concurrent treatment of acoustic sources particularly organ, piano, strings, and woodwinds often involving de-familiarization through processing. Her work considers the experience of enveloped sonic dwelling, utilizing extended durations, psychoacoustic manipulations, and simple harmonic structures that emphasize variations in overtone complexity and natural phasing patterns.
Her work as a researcher concerns aspects of experimentalism, organology and archival study, and phenomenology and perception, and has been published and presented within North America and Europe. Since 2007, Davachi has also had the unique opportunity to work for the National Music Centre (formerly Cantos Music Foundation) in Calgary as an interpreter and content developer of their collection of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments. She has held artist residencies at The Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff, Canada), STEIM (Amsterdam, Netherlands), WORM (Rotterdam, Netherlands), EMS (Stockholm, Sweden), OBORO (Montréal, Canada), and MESS (Melbourne, Australia) and is the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and SOCAN. She is currently a doctoral candidate in musicology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
"SH-2000"
SH-2000 is a synthesizer duo formed by Calgary, Canada musicians Barnaby Bennett & Patrick Whitten. Both play 1972 Roland SH-2000 synthesizers, hence the name, and incorporate natural/environmental sounds into their performances. SH-2000 has released three albums that have received press write-ups from outlets such as Ore Media (Japan), Tiny Mix Tapes (USA) and Weird Canada. They will be performing a short improvised ambient piece alongside a short set of classical music for laptop, synthesizer & live electronic processing.
