The duo of Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy had a HUGE impact on folk music around the world in the 1970s and 80s. Some classic versions of songs and memorable performances came from the duo, and some of their recordings have passed into "classic" status in many collections.
Well, their sons Rory Makem and Donal Clancy, no strangers to impactful music themselves, have decided to get together to explore the magic of their fathers while bringing their own very different experiences and talents to the mix. I got to see them for the first time at Tommy McCarthy's benefit concert for mental health awareness at the National Concert Hall in Dublin last year. They had gotten together for the first time at Milwaukee Irish Festival the previous August, and their reception in Dublin convinced them they should get together again.
They are coming back to Milwaukee and have decided to pay The Burren a visit. They will perform two shows on this night, and if I was to bet, I would say both will sell out quickly. This concert I think, will be a piece of musical folk history. Don't miss out on it. Below, a Milwaukee audience member captured this magic redo of Brennan on the Moor.
The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world. It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
