Gowanus Canal Conservancy Mission & Overview:
The Gowanus Canal Conservancy is a Brooklyn-based environmental organization that was formed in 2006 to to advocate for the restoration and green development of the Gowanus Canal for the greater good of the community. Our work focuses around improving the water quality and environmental integrity of the Gowanus Canal and its watershed. To that end, we have developed an open space and stormwater management masterplan for the Gowanus Canal watershed, the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park. Additionally, we host community and public education programs and organize monthly public stewardship Clean & Green volunteer events. By engaging people in our programs, and especially through volunteer activities, residents and community members have become extremely passionate about the Canal and much more knowledgeable about its history, ecology and social value. By facilitating direct action stewardship programs, the local sense of ownership for the canal has grown tremendously.
