Woodland Birdsong and Identification Course
Throughout the day, a mix of indoor and outdoor tuition will give you the opportunity to learn a variety of common woodland birds. After the summer months, birds such as Song Thrushes and Robins are starting up their song again ready to choose their mates during the winter months. Meanwhile, winter migrants such as Redwings are just arriving. This course, designed for relative beginners and those wanting to develop their identification further will start off indoors looking at visual and sound identification before spending time outdoors looking and listening in the field. We will also look at how our birds can be recorded for science and how you can get more involved with monitoring birds where you live.
Meet the expert:
Ed Drewitt is a freelance naturalist wildlife detective. His particular specialty is enabling others to learn birdsong and identify birds and delivers courses for the British Trust for Ornithology. Eds other work includes fossil hunting with schools, showing people wildlife from boats and leading wildlife holidays around the world.
Ed also works at the University of Bristol overseeing biology practical sessions. His wildlife detective title relates to his ability to identify the tiniest of bird feathers left over from a Peregrines meal! A zoology graduate from the University of Bristol, Ed has been studying what urban Peregrines eat and colour ringing their young for the past 12 years. His most exciting discovery was that Peregrines, our fastest bird in the world, do in fact hunt at night over towns and cities.
