This play is a dramatic presentation that takes place in the upper South days before the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the  Constitution of the United States of America.  It is fictional, but based on historical information about slavery during the 1800s.  It is the 3rd play in a trilogy written by Dr. Percy Thomas.  The first play, The Last Shall Be First, and 2nd play, Great Day In A Morning have set the stage for this play.

Zelma is a free slave who manages a large plantation willed to her by her former slave master, who was her father.  Despite the efforts of white townspeople and slave owners to take the land, she is determined to keep it and protect the slaves and families that work for her.
