Omar Souleyman, who started as a wedding singer is his native Al-Jazira region in northeastern Syria, has emerged as a world and electronic music marvel playing shows throughout the United States and Europe. Hes currently on tour with his newest album To Syria, with Love, a reflection on his war-torn homeland.
Opening for the mostly techno Souleyman will be the UCSB Middle East Ensemble, playing traditional instruments with dance accompaniment.
The concert will also serve as a forum to raise awareness of the evolving humanitarian crisis in Syria, and offer a space for attendees to participate in relief efforts. Student socio-cultural groups and organizations focused on Middle East issues will be on hand to share information. Details about Souleymans charity Our Heart Aches for Syria, a collaboration with Doctors without Borders, will also be available at the event.
The show is all ages and is located at Storke Plaza on the UC Santa Barbara campus. Admission is free. Showtime is 6pm.
