Cryin' Out Loud: An Evening of Poetry and Performance
Join us for an evening of poetry and performance by Rosemary Meza-DesPlas, Jessica Helen Lopez, Eva Marisol Crespin, and Brandy Montaño. These four powerful female and gender non-conforming voices speak up loudly to challenge systems of oppression through words of passion, politics, revolution, and love.

Rosemary Meza-DesPlas is a Latina visual artist/writer/spoken word performer based in Farmington, New Mexico. For Cryin Out Loud, Ms. Meza-DesPlas will be performing a series of poems which focus on the gendered-base burdens carried by women, inclusive of poverty, violence and politics. The feminine onus is heightened by entrenched patriarchal institutions and reaches a crest during political unrest and instability.

Jessica Helen Lopez is a Xicana Xingona, poeta, teacher, mama, intersectional feminista, and a part-time chubacabra. The former City of ABQ Poet Laureate (2014-2016) will perform a series of poems for Cryin' Out Loud that will focus on the unbridled power, passion and an innateness of brujeria that is found in all women and gender-identified women across the global spectrum. Through her written work, Lopez reclaims and sanctifies what the political/dogmatic greed of the patriarch has attempted to take from women. In her poems she resurrects language, ceremony and sacred sexuality of La Muxeria.

Burque native, Eva Marisol Crespin is a slam poet, writer and activist. She has been writing and performing since the age of 12. Coming off a win at the 2016 National Poetry Slam Group Piece finals, Eva has been a part of a Number of slam teams who have seen final stage. She continues to slam and write poetry in her hometown of Albuquerque. She is currently working towards her degree in social work, working as a server, and teaching writing workshops in schools, recovery centers, and in the community. She identifies as a Queer, Xingona, Xicana, who is sculpting words and ripping herself open to speak her truth. Eva's recently published chapbook, Morena, is available for purchase at paypal.me/ABQPoeta/15.

Brandy Montaño is an Indigenous, Gender Non-Conforming Queer from Albuquerque's South Valley. Brandy is a trained organic farmer, and is working towards transitioning out of the movie industry to better serve her community, and is an advocate for food justice and sovereignty. Writing about love, is her act of revolution. Poetry has provided her a platform for creative expression. She is reconnecting to, and practicing her medicinal ancestry, while reclaiming Native ways to live in harmony with Mother Earth. Brandy is an advocate for gender justice, and it's integration into the social, economic, and environmental justice movements. Brandy takes every opportunity to challenge our perceptions of masculinity, and bring down our compliance, and participation in heterosexual patriarchy.

Cryin' Out Loud is a juried exhibition that examines the role of women's and femmes' voices as expressed in art about politics, activism, and emotion. Considering both the metaphoric and literal voice, Cryin' Out Loud explores and celebrates the use of art as a form of speaking up and out. A large group exhibition of works by selected artists will take place in CCA's Muñoz Waxman Gallery, on view from April 21 to July 9, 2017.
