THE ROARING GIRL by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker -- Directed by Gaby Schneider
THE ROARING GIRL is a comic dramatization of the life of Mary Frith, known as "Moll Cutpurse", a reputed virago in the early 17th century. The term "roaring girl" was taken from the slang term "roaring boy", a young man who caroused publicly, brawled, and committed petty crimes. Mary was also the subject of a lost chapbook titled "The Mad Pranks of Merry Moll of the Bankside". On the basis of documents from a lawsuit, the actual Mary Frith seemed indeed the type of person depicted by Middleton and Dekker. The real Mary Frith may have even stepped in once to play her own part as Moll in a performance at the Fortune Theatre in old London. This comedy,400 years before its time, recalls the story of a somewhat punk, take-no-prisoners, Jacobean woman.
Gaby Schneider directs a cast of 14 at the Theater of Others home: the Kelly Cullen Community Auditorium, 220 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco. THE ROARING GIRL runs Thursdays through Sundays, March 17-April 2. As with all Theater of Others productions, admission is Pay-What-You-Will.
