ESC Presents - Implications for Canada-U.S. Trade with the new U.S. Administration and Congress
The ESC is proud to present Carlo Dade, Director of the Trade and Investment Centre at the Canada West Foundation and Trevor Tombe, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary who will address the topic Implications for Canada-U.S. Trade with the new U.S. Administration and Congress. Both presenters will not only provide their insights on how Canada-U.S. trade may evolve but also on factors that will both influence and be influenced by that evolving trading relationship such as the TransPacific Partnership and the Comprehensive European Trade Agreement (CETA).

Since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump and the changes in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, many have wondered what the implications will be for Canada-U.S. trade. Will, as President Trump said in an earlier visit in 2017 from Prime Minister Trudeau, there be minor changes or tweaks to agreements such as NAFTA or could there be a move towards more comprehensive trade protectionism? In either case, what will be the implications for the Alberta economy and other primary industry intensive provinces?

He received his MA and PhD from the University of Toronto and an undergraduate degree in finance from Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Tombes research includes the study of the importance of trade in agriculture for poor countries. That is, barriers to food imports by poor countries significantly lower their aggregate productivity, helping us understand the source of differences between rich and poor countries. In other work, with co-author Jennifer Winter (School of Public Policy), he studies the productivity effect of energy intensity standards.
